You have to understand that we never meant for it to happen. We knew it was stupid. We knew it was wrong. Eighteen-year-old Danni Warren has big plans for her last summer before college: a cool job, a concert she wouldn’t miss for the world, and spending time with her beautiful girlfriend, Esme. But after one hell of an argument, Danni’s mother packs her off to stay with her estranged step-uncle, Gabe, in his lodge on the English coast. So begins a weekend of the worst punishment imaginable: no phone signal. With his sun kissed good looks and sarcastic manner, twenty-nine-year-old Gabe Asher isn’t anything like Danni expected. She wants to hate him—he’s her punishment for standing up to her mother—but between surfing lessons and beach hikes, Gabe and Danni grow close. Maybe too close. Now Danni’s questioning everything: old family secrets, her future, her strained relationship with Esme. One sun stained afternoon, Gabe and Danni go too far. And then everything else falls apart… |
When I found this out, I was like, "Woah. Just got real."
Danni is my alter ego. She's outspoken, sarcastic, and even has a vulnerable side to her. It was funny how she could make everything into joke. Weird situations or awkward moments became hilarious. At least for me. This book kind of surprised me, but in an awesome way. I tried to predict what the outcome or climax of this book might me, and once again, I was wrong. I didn't think, SPOILER!!, Gabe would be the one to give the go ahead for the illicit relationship to begin. I figured due to his maturity that was obviously beyond her years, he would tell his niece to hold off. The fact they were related, though not by blood, made the whole thing even more forbidden. I think all you readers will be giggling to yourselves reading this.
Though the entire plot wasn't action packed, the last half of it was. The weekend Danni spent with Gabe starts unraveling its own set of consequences, and like Danni, I was definitely not prepared for everything that it would bring. I don't want to give anything away but, my heart did a little dance from what they would risk to be together.
There's nothing I particularly disliked about Twisted Summer, but there was a few explicit scenes that I had to skip past. They were just a little...much. I also felt like maybe the author could have did something more with the title. It is called Twisted Summer, so maybe adding one more element to it to make it even more twisted would suit it.
I liked the book, and all hormonal girls with the desire of something light, but with a good dosage of subject matter, will like it too. I'll keep it on my bookshelves, come there ever be a time I have a crush on my uncle.
There's also a giveaway you guys can enter to win your own copy of Twisted Summer, along with some other goodies. I'm extremely tempted, but I don't think it's right to enter a giveaway on your own blog. I'm restraining myself.
About the Author:
Lucy writes sharp contemporary fiction, usually with a liberal splatter of filth. She is a Lyrical Press author and a screenwriter.
Her upcoming new adult novel, TWISTED SUMMER, is a gutsy take on forbidden love starring an even gutsier heroine. Her contemporary series, encompassing CHAIRMAN OF THE WHORED and THE WHORED'S PRAYER, features slick London lawyers with a penchant for sensual violence. It's definitely on the darker side. BEAUTIFUL MESS, her current release, is a snarky, sexy friends-to-lovers romp.
Lucy is currently working on new novels, and is developing a paranormal television series with producers (think The Vampire Diaries meets The 4400).
She is still trying to kick her dirty Pepsi habit.
